Checks for more safety for cyclists - Police Commissioner Frank Hoever gets information on site
Road accidents involving cyclists repeatedly result in serious injuries. This year, 218 cyclists were involved in accidents on the roads in the Bonn police's area of responsibility between the beginning of January and the end of May.

39 of them suffered serious injuries. A 65-year-old cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in a traffic accident on 6 June 2020 in Bornheim-Sechtem, from which he died in hospital a few days later. "Our goal is to prevent these accidents," says Police Commissioner Frank Hoever.

The safety of cyclists was once again the reason for checks by the Bonn police traffic service today (09.07.2020). At checkpoints in Beuel, Dransdorf and in the center of Bonn, police officers focused on the misconduct of motorists as well as violations by cyclists.

The head of the authorities visited the checkpoint in Dransdorf in person on Thursday morning. "Reducing accidents involving cyclists is the focus of our road safety work," emphasized Hoever. "In addition to the checks, this also includes prevention work." The Bonn police's road safety advisors teach children how to ride their bikes safely in traffic as early as elementary school. They also take account of new developments in road traffic by supporting pedelec training courses run by the ADFC Bonn/Rhein-Sieg.

"The most common causes of road accidents involving cyclists are failure to give way or priority and errors when turning. This applies to both car drivers and cyclists," says First Chief Superintendent Jan Waszilewitz from the Bonn Police Traffic Directorate. "We therefore focus on these causes of accidents during our checks," continues Waszilewitz.
